Volume 6        Number 7       October/November 2007

President’s Corner

I am pleased and honored to have been elected to serve as your President for 2007-2008.  As President, I will endeavor to strengthen the Association and support the work of its committees.  I will also work to make the Association a valuable source of information for its members and title industry customers.

Eric Morgan (the Association’s Executive Director) and I recently attended the American Land Title Association Annual Convention.  At the Convention, ALTA introduced its Title Industry Consumer Initiative and Principles of Fair Conduct.  In the coming weeks, the Board will discuss ways in which the Association can support and promote ALTA’s Consumer Initiative and Principles of Fair Conduct.

It is worth noting that Colorado was well represented at the Convention.  LTAC Board Members, Chris Condie and Mike Gilbert, and former LTAC Presidents, Diane Evans and Curt Fix, attended the  Convention.

Our annual Fall School will be held in Lone Tree on December 3rd and 4th.  Education Committee Chair, Dean Ruybal, and his fellow committee members have developed an excellent set of classes covering a wide range of important issues.  The Fall School benefits all attendees and participants.  I would like to thank the many volunteers who are working to make the Fall School a success.

The Legislative Committee is already examining several important matters relating to the 2008 legislative session.  One of its current tasks involves the monitoring of a Sunrise Review Application that was recently submitted, by the Association, to the Department of Regulatory Agencies.  That application, which addresses concerns regarding unlicensed settlement service providers, can be viewed here.

Several members of the Legislative Committee participated in the October 30th rulemaking hearing regarding proposed Regulation 3-5-2.  Their efforts were rewarded at the hearing when the Division of Insurance agreed to make particular modifications that were consistent with Association recommendations.  In short, the Division agreed that its 3-5-2 fee, which is paid by title underwriters to fund two full-time Division employees as required under Section 10-3-207, should be calculated as a pro-rata share of the total premium derived from the title insurers’ Colorado title insurance business.

I would like to thank Cindy Compton, Bob Burns and the other members of the Convention Committee for all of their efforts in organizing and producing the 2007 Annual Meeting and Convention.  The speakers were exceptional and the facilities were first-rate.

Again, I wish to thank all of you for allowing me to serve as the president of the Association.  It is a terrific organization that benefits the entire title industry.

Best Wishes to All,

George Sutherland

LTAC’S 87th ANNUAL CONVENTION VAIL, CO

“AWESOME”, “FANTASTIC”, “THE BEST EVER” – these are just a few of the comments we heard when we asked attendees what they thought about this year’s Annual Convention and Meeting!  Those of you who didn’t attend this year should be sure to mark your calendars for September 10-13, 2008 because we’ll be returning to the Vail Marriott for another fun-filled event.  We already know that this year’s attendees are planning to return, so be sure to get your registrations filled out and hotel reservations made just as soon as they become available next summer.  We filled the hotel this year!!

Highlights of the event included the golf tournament on Wednesday afternoon (attended by golfers and bears alike!), followed by our Ice Breaker Reception.  Attendees mixed and mingled in the exhibit hall while others ventured off to take part in the Casino Night activities.  Everyone had a great time visiting and relaxing in the Marriott’s beautiful surroundings.

Thursday and Friday were filled with up-to-date sessions ranging from current regulatory issues in Colorado to financial analysis issues impacting title insurance professionals nationwide.  We heard about employment law, mortgage fraud and the always popular Claims Chronicles presented by Burt Rush.  Our friend Bo Edwards played his banjo and serenaded us while introducing Willis Carpenter and his session on the history of the “Centennial State”.

Magician Richard Kwesell opened the Annual Banquet festivities on Friday night.  His pre-event publicity said that he … “has the hands of a conman and the charm of a showman” and now we understand why.  He had us all shaking our heads and marveling at his performance.

Meets and Bounds – New LTAC Board Member James Vincent

I presently work for Colorado Land Title Company in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.  I have been with Colorado Land Title Company since 1999.  Five of the past eight years were spent working in our Durango, Colorado Branch and the last three years here in Pagosa Springs.  As the Office Manager I help my staff with anything and everything from the new order through the final policy.  It’s not hard to stay busy while running office errands, working up settlement statements, doing presentations, title examining and extinguishing the occasional fire. I suppose it’s nice to be needed!  At the most recent LTAC convention in Vail, CO I was recognized as the "Outstanding Young Title Person of the Year" and was also sworn in as a Regional Director to serve on the LTAC Board.

My wife and I met in Durango, Colorado.  I played rugby on the Fort Lewis College men's team and of course she played on the women's.  We have two dogs, a yellow lab and some sort of mutt mix, both great dogs.  We enjoy living in Pagosa Springs and feel very fortunate to live and work in such an amazing place.  Summers include camping, riding dirt bikes, rodeos and my favorite, yard work.  Fall is always set aside for big game hunting.  Winters are spent on the snowmobiles and snowboards.

“Outstanding Young Title Person of the Year”
And “Outstanding Achievement” Awards

By Debby Armstrong

2005 Outstanding Young Title Person of the Year

I’m pleased to announce that we had an increase in the number of nominees for the 2007 LTAC awards for “Outstanding Achievement” and “Outstanding Young Title Person of the Year”.  For those of you who were not aware, the guidelines slightly changed this year.  The requirement that the nominees be present at the convention was removed.   Instead, the awards committee came up with a series of questions to ask the nominees.  Phone interviews were conducted and a summary of the answers were provided to each committee member.  The participation and feedback as to the new process has been very positive.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the awards committee: Robin Nash, Marie Rogers-Patrick, Sherry Ciancio, Tracy Teran, Kelli Flores and Misty Smith.  Their expertise, support and participation was so appreciated.

I would also like to thank everyone who took the time out of their hectic schedules to submit nominations for the 2007 LTAC awards.  Choosing just one recipient in each category was very difficult. Every nominee exhibited the skills, passion and knowledge that these awards represent. It was a true pleasure visiting with the nominees.  In my book, every one of them was a winner.  What an honor to be recognized by your peers.

I would like to congratulate Pat Cooke, the 2007 “Outstanding Achievement Award” winner.  Pat began her career 27 years ago working for Transamerica Title in Fort Collins.  During her career she has managed several title plants for several different companies.  She currently is the title plant Operations Manager for Attorneys Title.  She is an active member of ATIM (Association of Title Information Management) and serves as co-chair for PRIA (Property Records Industry Association).  Among one of Pat’s goals is to bridge the gap between the public and private sectors regarding public record matters.  Pat considers one of her biggest achievements to be owning and managing her own company from 1995 – 1999 in Park County.  The success of the company attracted a large national company, who purchased it 1999.   As far as Pat knows there was never a claim filed during the time she owned it!  Pat is dedicated to providing the agents she serves with outstanding customer service, new innovative products and the tools they need to keep a viable and lucrative foot in the industry.

Receiving the “Outstanding Young Title Person” award was James Vincent.  James started in the business with Colorado Land Title Company after graduating from college at Fort Lewis College in Durango with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.  He is going on his ninth year in the business.  James started as the office assistant, moved into closing assistant and than became a closer.  In 2004 he moved from Durango to Pagosa Springs as a manager trainee.  He currently serves as the office manager.  James holds his Insurance Producer License and is pursuing his CTIS designation.  Among his most recent accomplishments is getting voted on as a Regional Director for LTAC.  James is a soccer coach for 8 – 10 year olds and volunteers at the local rodeo.  In James words, “My philosophy is to do it right the first time, tell it like it is, don’t sugar coat it, solve problems and exceed what is expected. “
